Surgeons commonly recommend MLD post-surgery to manage swelling and promote healing. It is also valuable for individuals with lymphedema. 

Manage Lymphedema

Lymphedema management is a comprehensive approach aimed at reducing swelling and improving the client’s overall well-being. It typically involves several key components: Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), compression therapy, exercise and proper skin care.

MLD is an essential part of lymphedema management. During MLD, a therapist gently massages the affected area to remove excess fluid and protein from the tissues. MLD sessions often start with the unaffected regions to open lymphatics, which can then assist in draining the affected area.

MLD is followed by compression therapy that wraps multi-layered bandaging around the affected limb. Special bandages are used that are resistant to muscle contraction and offer comfortable padding beneath. The bandages help maintain the fluid reductions achieved with MLD and may even lead to further reduction. Ideally, they are reapplied daily.

An essential component of lymphedema management is a tailored exercise program, as effective lymph flow relies on sufficient muscle and joint activity, especially when the lymphatic system is compromised. These exercises are most effective when performed while wearing compression garments or bandages. Modified yoga offers an achievable, gentle exercise for people with lymphedema and is very effective at stimulating muscles.

Good skin care is also vital in preventing complications of lymphedema. Daily cleansing with antibacterial washes and pH-balanced lotions helps eliminate potential bacterial and fungal growth and can reduce the risk of cellulitis or lymphangitis.
