What Is Wellness?
Wellness is the state of achieving a harmonious balance between various aspects of our lives, encompassing physical, mental and emotional well-being. The concept of wellness has a rich history dating back centuries, with cultures worldwide embracing holistic approaches to well-being. For example, Chinese culture has long practiced wellness through holistic medicine, incorporating techniques like acupuncture and herbal remedies to restore balance within the body’s energy systems. Similarly, Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, emphasises the importance of balance in bodily systems through diet, herbs, and meditation. Indigenous cultures around the world have also practiced wellness by connecting with nature and their communities.
Work Life Wellness
Research shows that by prioritising work-life wellness, individuals can reduce stress, enhance their physical and mental health, and maintain better work performance. Ultimately, it contributes to a more satisfied, engaged, and productive workforce, benefiting both employees and the organisations they work for.
Lymphatic Drainage Types
Lymphatic Massage involves a gentle and relaxing massage technique that stimulates lymphatic flow within the body. It is ideal a soothing and light massage experience. Lymphatic Massage can be especially beneficial for conditions like Lipoedema, as it helps reduce fluid retention and enhances overall circulation. Additionally, it can be incorporated into holistic treatments like facials to address puffiness, detoxify the face, and promote relaxation.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), or Complete Decongestive Therapy, is a specialised therapy for managing lymphedema and other lymph-related disorders. MLD requires extensive training to provide precise and effective treatment. It involves gentle, rhythmic movements that stimulate the lymphatic system, aiding in removing excess fluid and waste. Surgeons commonly recommend MLD post-surgery to manage swelling and promote healing. It is also valuable for individuals with lymphedema.
Manage Lymphedema
MLD is an essential part of lymphedema management. During MLD, a therapist gently massages the affected area to remove excess fluid and protein from the tissues. MLD sessions often start with the unaffected regions to open lymphatics, which can then assist in draining the affected area.
MLD is followed by compression therapy that wraps multi-layered bandaging around the affected limb. Special bandages are used that are resistant to muscle contraction and offer comfortable padding beneath. The bandages help maintain the fluid reductions achieved with MLD and may even lead to further reduction. Ideally, they are reapplied daily.
An essential component of lymphedema management is a tailored exercise program, as effective lymph flow relies on sufficient muscle and joint activity, especially when the lymphatic system is compromised. These exercises are most effective when performed while wearing compression garments or bandages. Modified yoga offers an achievable, gentle exercise for people with lymphedema and is very effective at stimulating muscles.
